The Climbing Room - Reflections

Because the Climbing Room is to contain a climbing wall that is over 3m in height it was necessary to recess the foundation structure below garden level to maintain a 2m height along the boundary perimeters. Consequently it was necessary to install 2 types of waterproofing protection to meet the guidance of BS8102:2022. Georgia Burbridge CSSW of Delta Membrane Systems Ltd kindly helped us with the specification for this. To reduce the risk of thermal bridging the foundation slab was cast on a Cordek Ltd insulation on a Cellcore HX Plus base. Soprema XPS insulation was installed to the outer perimeter faces of the RC concrete walls. Above ground, with the help of Unity Lime Products, we specified a cold wall and roof construction using 100mm Isolair insulation above the wall studs and roof joists, 200mm Pavaflex between the wall studs and roof joists and 60mm Pavaflex within the service void. Because the structure is within 1m of the boundary on 3 sides it was required that we install a fire board over the Isolair insulation. With the help of Andrew Neal we opted for Magply board because it has an acceptable water permeability factor. I should mention that to ventilate the cold roof and walls we relied extensively on NICHOLSON® roof products.
